Jay vs. Solange: Why It's Not Funny

On Monday, celebrity gossip site TMZ released a video involving a fight between singer/songwriter Solange Knowles and her brother-in-law Jay-Z. Beyonce was also present during this altercation. The fight occurred after Beyonce, Jay-Z and Solange left a MET Ball afterparty a few weeks ago. In the video, the trio enter an elevator and Solange immediately begins attacking Jay-Z. The video, captured on hotel surveillance,  does not have audio so it's impossible to know what caused the situation. Watch the full video here.

To no one's surprise, the Internet went crazy with the footage. Memes popped up everywhere and within minutes, the hash tag #WhatJayZSaidToSolange, became the number 1 trending topic on Twitter. I'll admit, I laughed so hard when going through the tweets. I thought it was the funniest thing but after awhile, I realized how serious the situation actually was.

Overall, the video, and it's accompanying memes, promote the idea that physical violence from a woman against a man is a laughing matter. It is not. Had Jay hit or harmed Solange in any way, the public would be outraged! It would be Chris Brown/Rihanna all over again and we all know how bad that was. Hundreds of thousands of men are physically assaulted by women every year. Little to no men report domestic violence against them and it makes perfect sense why they don't. The stigma surrounding domestic violence against men is intense, shown especially by the reaction of the of the Jay/Solange fight.

What ever happened between the three of them is strictly their business and no matter what, we should not be laughing. Luckily, there's been a lot of people who see this double standard in our society and are speaking out against it.
